No multistate license has been issued anywhere, there is no application to file, and a license from another compact state gives you no right to practice in Iowa. Iowa's clinical-level license is the LISW (Licensed Independent Social Worker), tested on the ASWB Clinical exam; the LBSW and LMSW sit below it. Since 2025-08-13, social work rules sit in the consolidated 481 IAC Chapter 880 (Board of Behavioral Health Professionals); the old Chapter 895 was rescinded. Chapter 880 has endorsement rules for counselors, MFTs and psychologists but no separate social work endorsement rule. An out-of-state LISW-equivalent uses Iowa's universal licensure-by-verification route (Iowa Code 272C.12, 481 IAC 501.1), which is still an application with checks, or applies with license verification and exam score. By-exam LISW applicants need 3,000 supervised hours over at least two years, including 1,500 direct-client and 110 direct-supervision hours (880.7). Rule 880.2(7)(h) still names the ASWB Social Work Registry as an alternative for transcripts and license verification, but the Registry stopped taking new applications on 2026-03-16 and closes 2027-03-31. Iowa has ENACTED the Social Work Licensure Compact, but the compact is not issuing multistate licenses yet.
