Being a compact state has not changed how Oklahoma licenses incoming social workers. The Social Work Licensure Compact is law here but was not issuing multistate licenses as of 2026-09-27, so the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers (OSBLSW) handles every out-of-state applicant through the steps below. If you expect to work across state lines later, a Oklahoma license will be a sensible base once the compact is running; the commission's stated target for its data system is Spring 2027.
Oklahoma's clinical license is the LCSW. Other tiers are the LSWA, LMSW, LSW and LSW-ADM, and OAC 675:10-1-4 limits clinical private practice to the LCSW. Under 59 O.S. 1261.4, an applicant currently licensed elsewhere must hold a social work degree at the level sought, must have been eligible for Oklahoma licensure when first licensed, must have a passing score on the designated exam and a license in good standing, and must have no suspended, revoked or restricted license. Transfer applicants are licensed only at the equivalent designation. Where no reciprocity exists, the Board may endorse another board's action if you met Oklahoma's education and supervision requirements and passed the same or a more stringent exam (1261.4(B); OAC 675:10-1-15 evaluates whether the other state's criteria are equal to or stricter than Oklahoma's). By-exam LCSW applicants need 3,000 supervised clinical hours with 100 hours of educational supervision (OAC 675:10-1-1.2). Non-aggregator summaries claim a 'three years licensed' condition; it does NOT appear in 59 O.S. 1261.4 or in the 2026 agency rules we read, so it is not recorded here.
